Hypothyroidism
Thyroid diseases include hypothyroidism. The disease is caused by low hormone levels due to underactive (reduced) thyroid gland.
Onset: can be caused by iodine deficiency, but can also be caused by destruction of thyroid tissue, various drugs (e.g. lithium used in bipolar patients and phenylbutazone). Familial accumulation is known, but it can also develop spontaneously without any external influence. It can also develop after surgical removal of the thyroid gland.
Symptoms: it has many symptoms, which vary among patients. These include:
- mental symptoms: malaise, nervousness, feelings of tension, mood swings, lethargy, forgetfulness, cognitive impairment, loss of concentration
- testi tünetek: az anyagcsere lassulása (székrekedés; hirtelen, látszólag ok nélküli testsúlynövekedés), fáradékonyság, közben álmatlanság, kiszáradt bőr, hajhullás, hideg kezek, lábak, menstruációval kapcsolatos problémák, termékenységi problémák, szexuális vágy csökkenése.
Diagnosis: diagnosed by blood test. The most commonly measured hormones are TSH, fT3, fT4.
Thyroid and the endocrine system
Treatment: hormone replacement therapy. The right amount is set by the specialist and checked several times by taking blood samples. After the drug has been adjusted, an annual blood test is recommended. As it is a chronic disease, complete recovery is very rare, but with proper treatment it can be maintained and a symptom-free, full life can be lived.
